Dinosaurs evolved on Earth around 230 million years ago. They kept on evolving for 170 million years until 65 million years ago when mysteriously they all died out allowing the small mammals to evolve into the diverse life we see today.
At the start of the age of the dinosaurs the Earth looked very different from today as all of the continents were joined together. This single land mass we call Pangaea. Over millions of years Continental Drift caused Pangaea to break apart to create the continents that we now live on.
The dinosaurs that evolved over those 170 million years were very diverse but, clever paleontologists have grouped the dinosaurs by their similarities.
