Combat
To clear the monsters from the crypt you need to engage them in combat. Combat is performed using dice rolls, the process inspired by the old-style roleplaying board games.
| Control | Details |
| 1 | This area give you a running commentary of rolls and modifiers as they are applied. |
| 2 | Control buttons appear when you need to make rolls, choose to use items and choose to change weapons. |
| 3 | This section shows the stats for each monster in the fight. There can be up to three monsters to deal with. Clicking on the monster stats directs your attacks at the monster. |
| 4 | Your stats showing your health (red) and bravery (blue). The number in the shield shows your defence value (the amount a monster must beat to successfully land a strike). Your currently equipped weapon also appears here. The Roll Boost button function is described below. |
| 5 | The monster(s). |
| 6 | The dice roll area. Monsters roll the right hand dice while you roll the left hand dice (not shown). |
Roll boosts
When it's your turn to roll the dice you will see a Roll Boost button in your player stats area. This can be used to boost your roll, but reduces your bravery attribute by the same number. The number of boost points you can use depends on your current bravery value but also your current level.
Combat order
Roll for first strike
The monster (just one if there are two) rolls for first strike.
Then you roll for first strike.
Dexterity modifiers are added to the rolls.
If you roll a 9 or have a modified roll greater or equal to the monster's modified roll you strike first.
You can also use the Roll Boost to increase your chances. See detail on Roll Boosts above.
Player attack
You now have three options. Or four if you include the Flee option (see below).
| Options | Details |
| Weapon | This option allows you to choose another weapon. There is no penalty in doing this and you can still roll the dice. |
| Roll | To initiate an attack you roll your dice. This first roll determines if you strike the enemy. Based on your current weapon type (melee or ranged), modifiers are added and the roll value plus modifiers needs to be equal to or greater than the enemy's defence points (in the shield) to land a hit. For melee weapons (swords) the strength modifier is used. For ranged weapons (crossbow) the dexterity modifier is used. |
| Use Item | This brings up your inventory from which you can choose to use an item. This might be a potion to restore health, or a potion to attack with. If you use an item this ends your current go. |
Fleeing from the fight
You have the opportunity to flee the fight, but you need to roll the dice to do so. A modified roll greater than 3 will succeed. Fail the roll and not only do you stay in the fight, but you miss your chance to attack. If you do succeed in your attempt to flee you will find yourself back outside the room.
