Heraldry - Divisions
In heraldry a shield can be divided into major sections. These are known as the Divisions of the field. The major divisions and their terms are shown below. Each name starts with the term 'party per'. But the word 'party' can be left out so that 'per fess' or 'per bend' is enough to describe the division.
In the examples shown below the division part of the shield is shown as erminios, a yellow (or) background with black (sable) ermine tails.

Charges and partitions
The TimeRef medieval Shield editor allows control over how charges interact with the divisions
Default
The charge, in this case a Fleur-De-Lis is placed above the field (Gules) and the division (Argent).

Field
The charge can be clipped to only show on the field. The blazon for this would be 'Per pale Gules and Argent, a dexter demi-fleur-de-lis issuant from the line of partition Purpure.'
Division
The charge can be clipped to only show on the division. The blazon for this would be 'Per pale Gules and Argent, a sinister demi-fleur-de-lis issuant from the line of partition Purpure.'
Counter-changed
The charge colour on both the field and division is derived from the field and division.
