malric was an importnat ruler of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. He was the son of Fulk V, count of Anjou and King of Jerusalem and was the younger brother of Baldwin III and became king after Baldwin's death in 1163. Amalric was known for his military campaigns, particularly against Egypt, and for his diplomatic dealings with the Byzantine Empire. His ascension to the throne required papal approval due to concerns over his marriage to Agnes of Courtenay. Eventually, their marriage was annulled, though their children, including the future Baldwin IV, remained legitimate. Amalric led several capaigns against Egypt over the period of 1163 and 1169 when he attempted to bring the country under his control, but eventually these attempts failed. Amalric forged an alliance with the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos and travelled to Constantinople in 1171 to formally secure an alliance. With the rise of the Muslim leader Nur ad-Din (Saladin), Amalric faced increasing pressure at home. He died in 1174 at the age of 38 possibly from dysentery.
