harles' father was James VI of Scotland who later became James I of England and his mother was Anne of Denmark. The future king was born at Dunfermline in Scotland. He would be the first person to succeed to both thrones of England and Scotland. Charles was the second son of James and became heir to the English throne after the death of his elder brother Henry in November of 1612 when Henry died from typhoid fever at the age of 18. Fours years later Charles was created Prince or Wales. In 1623 Charles accompanied the Duke of Buckingham to Spain where an attempt was made to marry Charles to the Infanta Maria Anna of Spain. At the first the signs looked good and had the support of Pope Gregory XV but when Gregory died his successor was less supportive. After waiting several months in Spain for a resolution to conditions put upon the marriage by the new Pope, Charles decided to break the marriage agreement and returned to England. The English people were happy that the agreement had failed and soon the Duke was busy arranging a marriage proposal for Charles to Princess Henrietta Maria of France, the daughter of Henry IV, king of France and his wife, Maria de Medici. In May of 1625 A proxy marriage was performed at Notre-Dame in Paris as Charles did not travel to France, but in mid June the princess arrived in England.
