enry became King of Cypus in May of 1285 after the death of his elder brother John. John had only reigned for a year after the death of their father Hugh III in 1284. A year after becoming King of Cypus, Henry sailed to Acre after receiving advice that he should capture the port and become the King of Jerusalem. Acre had been held by the Angevins and after the death of Charles of Anjou, it was up for grabs. Henry landed in Acre in June of 1286 and was crowned King of Jerusalem in August of the same year. Shortly after being crowned, Henry returned to Cyprus to celebrate his achievements.
