he castle at Caen is located on the River Orne a few miles from the Normandy coast and was built on a hill that dominates the town. William the Conqueror built the castle a few years before invading England in 1066. Henry I of England had a large keep constructed within the castle but this was destroyed during the French Revolution at the end of the 18th Century. In 1204 the castle was captured by Philippe Augustus when he took control of Rouen and Normandy as a whole. During the Hundred Years War the castle was captured by the English in 1346 and 1417, but finally fell into French hands in 1450.
