Athelm, later to be Archbishop of Canterbury was consecrated to the see of Wells, by Plegmund, Archbishop of Canterbury and Wereferth, Bishop of Worcester. Athelm started as a monk at Glastonbury Abbey and was the first Bishop of Wells. [1]

When Athelm transferred from Wells to Canterbury, Wulfhelm was consecrated as the Bishop of Wells. [1]

Work on Wells Cathedral began in this year. (More Information to follow)

Building of the West Front of Wells Cathedral was begun.

Work commenced on the West Front of Wells Cathedral. [2]

The church at Wells was dedicated in this year, but did not get its status as a Cathedral until 1244.
1244
The Pope decreed that Wells should be reinstated as a Cathedral and the Bishop became the Bishop of Bath and Wells.

February
A very large earthquake is reported to have occurred in Wales and the west of England. St. David's on the west coast of Wales was badly affected. At Wells Cathedral the spire or vaulting collapsed but this is reported to have happened in an earthquake in 1248.

The spire at Wells Cathedral collapsed.

The Chapter-house and the complicated arrangement of steps leading to them were started in this year and were not completed until around 1310.

Work commenced on the Lady Chapel of Wells Cathedral. This may have taken place been between 1320 and 1330. [2]

Work commenced on the central tower of Wells Cathedral. This needed strengthening and in 1338, new internal arches were added to support the weight. [2]

Reconstruction work, possibly on the choir, took place at Wells Cathedral. [3]

The Scissor arches were added to prevent the collapse of the central tower.

William Wynford was the architect behind the South-west tower of Wells Cathedral. [2]

The North-west tower of Wells Cathedral was constructed during this time. [2]

There appear to be some strange connections between the fourteenth century Old Wardour Castle and ancient stone circle Stonehenge.
1: Location
Old Wardour Castle appears to be aligned to ancient sites in the Stonehenge landscape.
2: Alignment
Stonehenge is aligned to the Summer Solstice. Old Wardour has a very similar alignment.
3: Size
Could the builders of Old Wardour used mesaurements from Stonehenge to layout the geometrical keep?
